The insurance company for the City of Moline has agreed to pay for damages some residents incurred after a broken water pipe caused a sewage backup into their homes in June.

During the afternoon of June 7, a water pipe leading to a fire hydrant near the intersection of 47th St. and 28th Ave. fractured and caused a backup of sewer water into nearby homes.

The pipe was broken during a street reconstruction project that was being performed by a contractor hired by the City.

Nearby homeowners like Jasmine Lee said her home built in 2017 was flooded and that she had spent nearly $26,000 in repairs when News 8 talked with her in August.

"My basement was full of water and lots of parts needed to be replaced," Lee said. "The day of the incident, I couldn't figure out what was happening. It was over 12 inches before I reached out to the city."

Nine homes were damaged in the backup, and damages were estimated at $250,000, according to a press release sent by the city on Nov. 8.

On Nov. 3, the City's insurance carrier determined liability and agreed to pay the damage claims to the homeowners while it "pursues a resolution with the contractor's insurance carrier," the release said.

The City says they are working with the affected residents to resolve insurance claims.
