DAVENPORT, Iowa — Quad Citizens may spot MidAmerican Energy workers around the community over the next few weeks. That's because crews will be tackling four transmission line projects around the QCA. Those transmission lines are larger and higher-voltage than the ones that connect to local customers. All the dates for the projects are tentative and may be changed depending on weather conditions, wind speeds and other factors.
The first project is replacing the overhead transmission lines and power line markers over the Mississippi River at Campbell's Island between Riverdale and East Moline. Crews will be working from helicopters to swap out the lines and the red marking balls used to warn pilots about the presence of power lines. Work is scheduled to begin on Saturday, Jan. 20.
Second, an aerial line crew is set to replace the marking balls on a transmission line spanning the Mississippi River between Davenport and the Rock Island Arsenal, west of the I-74 bridge. That project is scheduled to begin on Thursday, Jan. 18.
Next up, on Friday, Jan. 19, workers will replace the marker balls on the transmission line crossing the Mississippi River between Buffalo and Andalusia, over Davenport's Enchanted Island.
Finally, crews in Davenport are expected to begin replacing transmission towers at the Interstate-280 and Iowa Highway 22 interchange on Thursday, Jan. 25.
This project isn't expected to require any road closures. However, MidAmerican officials said that workers will be piloting a new method of moving the overhead lines from the old tower to the new one while keeping them energized, minimizing disruption to customers. The approach will be evaluated for future use once the project is done.
