OHIO, Ill. — A suspect has been arrested after several hours of negotiation following the discovery of a man's body lying in an intersection in Ohio, Illinois, according to the Bureau County Sheriff's Office.
On Sunday Oct. 23 shortly after 6 p.m., deputies were dispatched to 302 W. Railroad Street in Ohio after receiving a call about a 10-month-old child who was taken by a non-custodial parent.
The body of a 69-year-old male, identified only at this time as an Ohio resident, was located nearby, near the intersection of West Railroad and Elm Streets. The man was found prior to the deputies' arrival.
The suspect that deputies had identified in the case, Matthew J. Pairadee, age 31 of Ohio, was seen pulling into the garage of his home in the 200 block of E. Long Street. Pairadee barricaded himself into the basement of the home and refused to come out, according to the Sheriff's Office.
A search warrant was obtained, and after several hours of negotiations with Bureau County and Illinois State Police negotiators, Pairadee remained barricaded. "Chemical agents" were deployed into the house and Pairadee was taken into custody.
The name of the 69-year-old found deceased is being withheld pending family notification and will be released later by the Bureau County Coroner.
Pairadee is being held at the Bureau County jail on pending charges. He was previously charged with aggravated assault and use of a deadly weapon in April 2022, with a jury trial scheduled to begin Oct. 31.
Ohio Community Schools cancelled school on Monday Oct. 24 as the incident was still active overnight. School is scheduled to resume on Tuesday.
The incident is under investigation by the Bureau County Sheriff's Office, the Illinois State Police and the Bureau County Coroner. Agencies assisting during the incident include the Princeton Police and Fire departments, Princeton EMS, Bureau County EMA, Buda Police department, Walnut, Wyanet and Ohio fire departments and the Illinois Department of Conservation.
