Victim identified in fatal Rock Island pedestrian crash

According to Rock Island police, the fatal pedestrian vs. vehicle crash occurred just before 8:30 p.m. on 1st Avenue, just west of the Centennial Bridge.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. — A man is dead after being struck by a car Thursday night in Rock Island.

According to Rock Island police, the fatal pedestrian vs. vehicle crash occurred just before 8:30 p.m. in the 1400 block of First Avenue, just west of the Centennial Bridge. An investigation determined a Chevy Impala was driving eastbound on First Avenue when it struck a pedestrian who was walking along the south side of the road.

The pedestrian was identified as 40-year-old Steven G. Aeschliman, of East Peoria. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the Impala was identified as a 20-year-old man. He was also transported to a local hospital to be treated. Police said there were no indications that the driver was impaired. 

The crash is under investigation. An autopsy is set for Monday.
