JO DAVIESS COUNTY, Ill. — A man has been arrested after fleeing from Galena police before crashing his vehicle while under the influence.
On Monday, April 22 at 8:19 p.m., Galena police officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a car near South Main Street and Water Street. The vehicle fled from police and eventually began traveling west on U.S. Route 20. Police ended the pursuit in the area of Route 20 and U.S. Route 84 North due to safety concerns.
Around 8:30 p.m., the Jo Daviess County Sheriff's Office received an iPhone crash detection alert on North Menominee Road, just south of Route 5 West. Responding deputies found that the vehicle's driver, 21-year-old Joseph Oimoen, had tried turning left but instead hit a mailbox, went airborne, hit a utility pole and rolled several times before coming to a rest in a driveway.
Oimoen was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Two passengers, an adult man and a juvenile were also transported to a local hospital with injuries.
Oimoen was arrested for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, illegal transportation of cannabis as a driver and driving under the influence of drugs.
The crash is under investigation by the Jo Daviess County Sheriff's Office.
