Man charged with attacking East Moline police officer fit to stand trial

Adrian Rogers, 53, is charged with attacking Sgt. William Lind back in October 2022.

ROCK ISLAND COUNTY, Ill. — Editor's Note: The video attached originally aired on Aug. 8, 2023, when Sgt. William Lind received a Purple Heart Award from the East Moline Police Department.

The man accused of severely injuring an East Moline police officer has been found fit to stand trial, according to court documents.

Adrian Rogers, 53, allegedly attacked Sgt. William Lind back in October of 2022 after fleeing the scene of a fire Rogers allegedly set at a Rock Island home. He is charged with attempted murder and aggravated battery of a peace officer, along with two arson-related charges.

In November of 2022, a Rock Island County judge found Rogers unfit for trial. This ruling was overturned during a status hearing on Thursday, Nov. 8, 2023, per court records.

The 2022 assault left Lind in critical condition. He has since gone back to work on restricted duty and was recently given a Purple Heart Award from the East Moline Police Department.

Lind was presented with the award by Chief Jeff Ramsey for acting "heroically, courageously, and without regard for his own personal safety in a commitment to the protection of our community in East Moline," a Facebook post about the award ceremony reads. The sergeant also received the First Responder Hero Award from Black Hawk College back on Oct. 27.

Rogers' case has been continued to Tuesday, Nov. 21. A preliminary hearing is set for 8:30 a.m. that day in a Rock Island County courthouse.
