Macomb to transform downtown square into world's largest Monopoly board

It'll be a permanent attraction, with giant game pieces and an immersive app that will allow visitors to play Monopoly along the 4,000-foot-long playing board.

MACOMB, Ill. — On May 9, Macomb, Illinois, will transform its downtown square into the world's largest monopoly game.

It'll be a permanent attraction, with giant game pieces and an immersive app that will allow visitors to play Monopoly along the 4,000-foot-long playing board. The Monopoly board will be played through a mobile app called "Macombopoly," which will turn the entire downtown square area into the world's largest Monopoly board at one million square feet.

The attraction will honor Lizzie Magie, who was born in Macomb in 1866 and created the precursor to Monopoly, The Landlord's Game. It will showcase Macomb's rich history and cultural heritage, and Magie's legacy.

An unveiling of the Monopoly board will take place on Thursday, May 9 at 11 a.m. at the Historic Courthouse Square in the center of downtown Macomb.
