MACOMB, Ill. — Two people are dead after a domestic violence incident in Macomb Saturday night where an officer discharged their weapon, officials say.

Shortly after 10 p.m. on March 16, officers with the Macomb Police Department responded to the 900 block of N. Charles Street — just off of Western Illinois University's campus — for an active domestic violence incident. According to a press release, a female had been stabbed several times and escaped. She was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The department posted on Facebook Saturday night warning the public to avoid the area while officials responded to the scene. According to police, WIU's Office of Public Safety and the Illinois State Police were at the scene as well.

Police say there were two fatalities but did not provide any information as to who they were or the manner of death. The press release says a Macomb police officer did discharge their weapon but no details surrounding why were provided.

The case has been turned over to the Illinois State Police to conduct an investigation and all officers that were involved have been placed on administrative leave, according to the department. News 8 reached out to ISP for more information and received the following statement:

The Macomb Police Department requested the assistance of the Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigation - Zone 4 for an officer involved shooting investigation. This is an open and ongoing investigation. To protect the integrity of the investigation, no further information is being released at this time. After a thorough investigation is completed, ISP will turn all reports over to the McDonough County State’s Attorney’s Office.

It's unclear whether any arrests have been made. News 8 has reached out to the university's Office of Public Safety to see if students were alerted on the incident but has yet to hear back. The case remains under investigation.
