Nonprofit hand delivers Thanksgiving meals to Scott County seniors

LivWell CARES volunteers delivered 285 hot meals to seniors across Scott County on Thanksgiving.

DAVENPORT, Iowa — A Davenport based nonprofit is helping make sure Scott County seniors have a hot meal on Thanksgiving. On Thursday, volunteers with LivWell CARES hand delivered 285 Thanksgiving meals to seniors.

"A lot of times this is the only meal they have for the day so the fact that they get to have Thanksgiving, actual Thanksgiving dinner on Thanksgiving is even better," Gwen Tombergs said.

Tombergs has helped deliver the meals for more than 20 years now. This year she brought her two grandsons to the independent senior living facility, Luther Towers, in Davenport where they delivered 16 individual meals. About 20 other volunteers delivered to other living facilities and homes.

"They love have people deliver the meal and to be able to say hi to them on the holiday," Tombergs said. "It's wonderful. You can tell that they really are appreciative that they have a hot meal and they have someone deliver it to them."

Sodexo, the food service operations of St. Ambrose University, helped cook and package the meals.

Thanksgiving is just one of the holiday meals LivWell CARES volunteers deliver. Between that, Christmas and New Year's Day, the nonprofit estimates they'll deliver 800 hot meals to seniors.
