LE CLAIRE, Iowa — A member of the LeClaire City Council is accused of drunk driving, according to an arrest affidavit.
Council member Barry Long was arrested on Sunday, March 3 shortly after 1:30 a.m. According to the affidavit, Long was spotted by officers sitting in his vehicle at the LeClaire Levee with the headlights and taillights on and the engine running. When the officer approached the vehicle, Long rolled down the window and the officer said in the affidavit they were able to smell alcohol from inside the vehicle. The officer also described Long's eyes as bloodshot and watery and said he was slurring his speech. According to the officer, Long was instructed not to drive and to call for a ride if he wanted to leave.
The officer then left the levee but returned a few minutes later, claiming they intended to give Long a ride home by himself. Upon returning, the officer spotted Long driving away from the levee and pulled him over. During a sobriety test, Long allegedly blew a .235 blood alcohol concentration — nearly three times the legal limit of .08. Long was eventually arrested and booked into the Scott County Jail.
Long was released from jail after posting a $1,000 bond. He is scheduled for arraignment at the Scott County Courthouse on Thursday, April 4 at 8:30 a.m.
