Lake Storey closed following diesel fuel leak

There's no timeline for when the lake will be open to the public again.

GALESBURG, Ill. — Access to Lake Storey is restricted following a diesel fuel leak.

Galesburg officials said firefighters responded to a leak near 3150 Log City Trial on Thursday, Feb. 8. Crews identified a nearby building as the source of the leak, which had spread into a creek which flows into Lake Storey. A press release from the city did not say how much fuel had leaked. The Illinois Department of Central Management Services and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency are working to minimize any damage from the incident.

Galesburg city officials said that keeping the public from the lake will help prevent residents and pets from being exposed to contamination in the water while also providing cleanup crews space to work. There's currently no set timeline for when access to the lake will be restored.
