Police chase leads to arrest in Kewanee

Prior to the chase, the suspect allegedly brandished a weapon toward another individual at Walmart.

KEWANEE, Ill. — A Kewanee man has been arrested following a pursuit and foot chase Sunday evening, according to police. 

Around 8:45 p.m. on Sept. 15, the Kewanee Police Department said they received a complaint that someone was "brandishing a firearm towards another individual" at Walmart on Tenney Street. Officers were sent to the scene and received a description of the suspect and the vehicle they were seen leaving the parking lot in.

The suspect's vehicle was spotted about a block away in the 300 block of East South Street. Police said the suspect, who has been identified as 24-year-old Jacques Nile, was sitting in the passenger seat. He briefly exited the car before getting back in on the passenger side. That's when the car fled the area and a pursuit started. 

In the 300 block of May Street, approximately three miles from where the pursuit started, police said Nile got out of the car and fled on foot towards the Fairview Apartment Complex. He was arrested in the complex following a short foot chase. 

The driver of the vehicle was also arrested and questioned, police said. She said Nile had assaulted her in the car prior to police attempting to stop them and threatened her not to stop during the police chase. At this time, police said the driver has been released without charges. 

Police said they also found a backpack allegedly belonging to Nile that contained a stolen gun, illicit drugs, drug paraphernalia and over $9,000. He faces 14 counts, which include:

  • armed habitual criminal (class X felony)
  • armed violence (class X felony)
  • possession of a stolen firearm (class 2 felony)
  • unlawful possession of a firearm without a FOID card (class 3 felony)
  • unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon (class 3 felony)
  • unlawful possession of ammunition without a FOID card (class A misdemeanor)
  • aggravated domestic battery (class 2 felony)
  • aggravated unlawful restraint (class 3 felony)
  • unlawful restraint (class 4 felony)
  • two counts of domestic battery (class A misdemeanor)
  • resisting a peace officer (class A misdemenor)
  • unlawful possession of a controlled substance (class 4 felony)
  • unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver (class 3 felony)

Nile is being held at the Henry County Jail pending his first court appearance.
