Iowa DNR investigating gasoline spill in the East Nishnabotna River

It's the second spill impacting the river in March alone.

CASS COUNTY, Iowa — Iowa DNR crews are investigating a gasoline spill into the East Nishnabotna River.

DNR officials said on Tuesday, March 19, a fuel transport truck was filling an underground storage tank at a Casey's General Store location in Atlantic. During the process, the tank overflowed, and an unknown amount of fuel was released into the river after flowing across the parking lot. According to the DNR, no fish or wildlife have been impacted.

It's the second spill into the river in March 2024, following 1,500 tons of fertilizer that were sent into the river on March 12.

DNR officials encourage residents to call the agency's emergency spill line at (515) 725-8694 to report spills. You can learn more about spill reporting requirements here.
