FULTON, Ill. — Tenants in a Fulton apartment building were forced to evacuate after police were notified of issues in the building.
According to Fulton Police, around 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 14, officers were notified of concerns surrounding the north and northeast corner of an apartment building located at 1206 4th St. After evaluating the building, Fulton Fire Command decided to restrict access to the building. This displaced two tenants inside the apartment, as well as one resident of a neighboring building.
"(With) what happened in Davenport, that was the biggest thing," Fulton Fire Chief Jimmy Pell said. "We wanted to get the people out of the residence and get the engineer here as fast as we could so we didn't have that situation."
City officials, the building's owner and a structural engineer met on Friday to inspect the structure, deeming it unsafe for occupancy until it can be stabilized on the north side. The building only has two tenants, who are living with family for the time being.
Residents and community members are asked to avoid the area. 4th Street from 13th Avenue to 12th Avenue has been closed to traffic. A map depicting that closure can be found below.
