DAVENPORT, Iowa — A family has been displaced after a Friday morning house fire in Davenport, according to officials.
Around 9:30 a.m., the Davenport Fire Department responded to a structure fire on South Concord Street after a postal carrier made a 911 call saying black smoke was coming from the residence.
Upon arrival, fire crews noted heavy smoke coming from the second story of the residence and were able to extinguish the flames within 15 minutes.
While searching the smoke-filled home for occupants, firefighters located a dog and a large rabbit using thermal imaging. Both animals were removed safely and unharmed. No injuries were reported.
The family was not home at the time of the blaze and the Red Cross is assisting them. The cause of the fire remains under investigation and any additional information will be released by the fire marshal.
The fire marshal wants to remind the public of the importance of working smoke detectors. Those in need can contact the Davenport Fire Department about their free smoke detector program.
