Gladstone woman sentenced in 2022 crash that killed 2 construction workers on Great River Bridge

HENDERSON COUNTY, ILLINOIS, Ill. — A Henderson County woman has been sentenced to 90 days in jail and 30 months of probation in connection to a 2022 crash that killed two construction workers on Great River Bridge. Her sentencing hearing took place on Thursday, May 9, court records show. 

Back on March 15, 23-year-old Emily Johnson of Gladstone, Illinois was found guilty of two counts of reckless homicide (class 3 felony) and two counts of unlawful use of an electronic communication device (class 4 felony). 20-year-old Pearson Franklin of New London, Iowa, and 35-year-old Andrew Whitcomb of Burnside, Illinois were killed in the crash.

According to the Illinois State Police, the two workers were walking behind their stationary pickup truck while placing construction barrels for a work zone on the U.S. Route 34 bridge on Oct. 18, 2022. The truck's yellow construction lights were on at the time of the incident. Johnson was driving westbound when she crashed into a construction barrel and then the workers, inflicting fatal injuries on both.

Court records show Johnson will serve 90 days in Henderson County Jail and then 30 months of probation, with a monthly probation fee of $25. She has been fined $8,174 and is also required to undergo a mental health assessment.
