ROCK ISLAND, Ill — Harvard University's new interim president is a Rock Island native and Rock Island High School graduate.
The university tapped Alan M. Garber, provost and chief academic officer, to serve as interim president until a permanent replacement can be named amidst accusations of plagiarism surrounding former Harvard President Claudine Gay, who resigned Tuesday.
Alan Garber graduated from Rock Island High School in 1973, according to a Rock Island-Milan School District spokesperson.
According to Harvard's website, Garber, an economist and physician, studies methods for improving healthcare productivity and healthcare financing. He has served as provost for 12 years.
Before arriving at Harvard, Garber served as a professor at Stanford University, where he founded and directed the Center for Health Policy and the Center for Primary Care and Outcomes Research. He completed his undergraduate studies at Harvard, before earning a Ph.D. from Harvard and an MD from Stanford.
