United Way Quad Cities gives free glasses to more than 500 students

The Vision to Learn program has also provided over 1,900 no-cost vision screenings.

DAVENPORT, Iowa — United Way Quad Cities is celebrating a major milestone in one of its new programs. Through the nonprofit's "Vision to Learn" program, more than 500 local students have received pairs of glasses at no cost. The program has also offered 1,900 free vision screenings.

To mark the occasion, United Way officials hosted a celebration at Fillmore Elementary School in Davenport on Wednesday, May 1. 30 Fillmore students received a pair of glasses during the event. A total of 100 Fillmore students have now received new glasses through the program.

"It was like the best thing I've ever done in my life, because now I have two pairs of glasses," Shawn Mukabane, a second-grade student at Fillmore, said.

The program is funded through donations from businesses and the Quad Cities community.
