MOLINE, Ill. — Bob Vogelbaugh, more widely recognized as Mr. Thanksgiving, is known for his community outreach. And the City of Moline plans to recognize him for this work during its city council meeting on Tuesday.
Vogelbaugh will receive a Key to the City, a symbol of one of the City's highest honors. The award is given to those who have given back to their communities in an exceptional way. Since 1972, Vogelbaugh has hosted a community Thanksgiving dinner for those who need a meal, conversation or simply don't want to be alone on the holiday.
"His commitment to inclusivity and hospitality has impacted thousands of individuals and families over the years," the City said in a press release.
During his meal this year at Mercado on Fifth, the City honored Vogelbaugh with a proclamation naming Nov. 28, 2024, as "Bob Vogelbaugh Day."
In addition to receiving the Key to the City honor during Tuesday's meeting, the City will also propose an honorary street sign in Vogelbaugh's name to honor his lifelong commitment to the Moline community.
"Vogelbaugh’s efforts to create a welcoming space for all, regardless of background or circumstance, embody the values that make Moline a great place to live," the City added in the release. "The City of Moline is fortunate to have such a dedicated and engaged resident, and it is fitting that he be recognized for his lifetime of service to others."
Moline City Council will meet at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 17 at City Hall, located at 619 16th St.
