GALESBURG, Ill. — For the last 45 years, Evan Massey has been the face of Galesburg Girls' Basketball. On Saturday, Dec. 2, the Silver Streaks secured Massey's 1,000th win in a 55-46 victory over United Township.
"It's special, I mean for a lot of reasons. For me, you know, it's exciting to have been able to coach that long at one school and the support they've given is wonderful," Massey said. "I'm glad we got it on the first try because I've got some friends and family that were here and I don't know how many times they would've been willing to come."
Massey has been Galesburg's coach since 1978 and holds a career record of 1,000-390. Massey is only the second coach to ever eclipse the 1,000-win mark in the IHSA, trailing only Dorothy Gaters' 1,133 wins.
Under Massey's guidance, the Silver Streaks placed third in 1996, fourth in 1997, 2000 and 2001 and runner-up in 1999 at the IHSA Girl's Basketball tournament.
The Silver Streaks are 8-0 and will look to contend for a Western Big 6 Title throughout the season.
