'I never thought it would come down to this' | Gilly's Corner Tap in Davenport set to close

Owner Alicia Goossens decided to close due to losing their liquor license.

DAVENPORT, Iowa — Back in January, the City of Davenport held Gilly's Corner Tap responsible for a shooting that left one person dead. It resulted in the city denying Alicia Goossens of her liquor license renewal.

"How dare them issue a liquor license here to me to be able to serve beer, liquor to the community, and then take it away from me for doing just that," Goossens said.

She would then appeal the decision to the Iowa Alcohol and Beverages Division but it would stand, leaving Alicia disappointed.

"I thought if I appealed to the State of Iowa and pled my case, someone would see that this is wrong," Goossens said. "It has taken everything out of me. It's even hard to be here because I just have so many emotions. I'm angry and I'm bitter."

The city set guidelines for the bar to follow during the appeal process. Despite it, Alderwoman Marion Meginnis says they failed to do so.

"A liquor license is not a right. It is a privilege and it comes with obligations. They did not fulfill those obligations" Meginnis said. "Police would still get called in. It wasn't as frequent. It wasn't as violent, nobody got murdered. But if your standard is nobody got murdered, it's pretty scary."

Now without a license, Goossens has decided she will close down her bar. She added that she wished the city would've helped her more during the process.

"If they're not planning to have some sort of police presence to support them, why are we issuing more liquor licenses to people in the city of Davenport?" Goossens said.

Meginnis says it's unfair for property owners to say police would take care of any issues they face because officers need to be available to take care of any issue going on in any part of the city.

The decision has been hard on Alicia but she now hopes to end on a high note.

"I hope that everyone that loves this place and people who have never gotten to try it would come down and support us in our final days," Goossens said. "We really need it."

Gilly's Corner Tap will remain open until November 19th. During its final days, the bar will be allowed to serve alcohol.
