GENESEO, Ill. — First Lieutenant Keith Elden is the latest in his family to join a tradition of military service. He and his older brother were inspired to follow in the example of their grandfather, John Elden.
"Corporal Elden served in various positions including radio telephone officer for the company commander," Keith said of his grandfather. "This included running for the company commander between fox holes when communication failed."
Now, Keith is celebrating his grandfather's hard work.
"I call it a little national honor society," he said.
Keith nominated John for the Order of Saint Maurice, which recognizes significant contributions to the infantry.
"It's a very informal ceremony, just disguised as an ice cream social," Keith said.
On Sunday, July 22, Keith and his father surprised John with the medal.
"You've excelled in the infantry profession, inspired generations to follow, and are an invaluable asset to the united states infantry branch, the military, and your family," Keith told his grandfather.
"It's just outstanding," John said. "Hard to put into words."
Years after coming home, the Elden family remains united by their service.
"I'm just amazed at these guys," John said.
