GALESBURG, Ill. — With the unusually warm weather comes the opportunity to hit the links, and golfers at Galesburg's Bunker Links Golf Course have a special anniversary to celebrate.
On Friday, March. 1, the course opened to players for its centennial season. The course first opened back in 1924 and originally only consisted of nine holes. Course officials said the course grew so popular over the course of just a few years that an expansion was approved, and nine more holes were completed in 1929. Since then, generations of golfers have had their chance to play the course, and course workers said the warm weather has been a welcome way to kick off their 100th year.
“We are thrilled to open Bunker Links for the first day of the centennial season, and hope that the forecasted terrific weather will equate to a very busy start to the season,” said Bryan Luedtke with Bunker Links Municipal Golf Course. “It’s not very often that weather allows for play to begin on March 1st, so we are very thankful for this stroke of luck as we celebrate the 100th anniversary of Bunker Links.”
The course has a few surprises in store for the monumental year. One of those will be a four-person "super ball tournament" that will take place on Thursday, June 6. That tournament will also have a live band performing for players and guests after the competition raps up. In addition to that, there will be a "centennial cup" points race that runs all season long.
Bunker Links is open from March 1 to Dec. 15 annually, weather permitting, and its operating hours run from 9 a.m. to dusk.
