GALESBURG, Ill. — A Galesburg resident got quite the surprise when they found a mortar while cleaning a relative's garage.
According to Galesburg police, the resident brought the mortar to the Galesburg Public Safety Building for disposal on Wednesday, Jan. 4. Officers brought the mortar to the east end of the grass outside the building to safely dispose of it.
After city employees were evacuated from the surrounding area, authorities said the Peoria Bomb Squad was called in to oversee the process of discarding the mortar. Bomb squad members determined that there was no explosive material present inside the mortar shell, and it was then taken off-site by the bomb squad for disposal.
