GALESBURG, Iowa — On Thursday, Feb. 29, the Galesburg Public Library closed its doors for the last time, but literature lovers will have a new place to get their fiction fix in the near future.
For over 60 years, the library was located on East Simmons Street in Galesburg. Now, staff are getting ready to move. The library will be relocating its operations to a new space on 264 West Main Street. Library officials said the expanded location will offer more spaces like study rooms and learning labs for visitors to make use of. While there's lots for employees to look forward to, letting go of their historic home still isn't easy.
"I have worked here 16 and a half years. This has been the only place I've ever worked, started as a shelver here. It definitely has been a whirlwind for me, and I've enjoyed my time here, and it's definitely a little bittersweet to to see it close. But I'm very excited for what the future holds for us," library employee Hillary Dillon said.
All items that were checked out in the month of February will be due in April, which is the month library officials said they hope to reopen to the public in their new home.
