Galesburg house fire leads to attempted murder charges, rescuing of minor

After a minor was rescued from a house fire on Thursday, officials said they arrested Jason D. Fielder on attempted murder, arson and sexual assault charges.

GALESBURG, Ill. — A man has been charged with attempted murder, arson and sexual assault after first responders rescued a minor from a house fire Thursday morning in Galesburg, according to city officials. 

Around 7:39 a.m. on Aug. 15, Galesburg police and fire officials responded to the 200 block of Highland Avenue for a structure fire. First responders found a juvenile in the residence who was initially taken to a local hospital. Officials said they were later transported to OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The fire was put out by the Galesburg Fire Department and was found to be intentionally set. Officials said they arrested 46-year-old Jason D. Fielder in connection to the incident. 

Fielder was charged with attempted murder, aggravated arson and aggravated criminal sexual assault. Additional charges may be announced, according to officials. He is in custody at the Knox County Jail pending his first court appearance. 

The Illinois State Police Crime Scene Unit, Illinois State Fire Marshal's Office and the Knox County Sheriff's Office assisted in the incident. No other information has been made available at this time.
