GALESBURG, Ill. — Galesburg residents will have something else to watch out for on the roads in the near future.
On Monday, Dec. 4, members of the Galesburg City Council voted to approve the purchase of five license plate cameras that will be deployed around town. The city council had previously considered the motion at their meeting on Nov. 20, but the vote was tabled until the December meeting.
According to city documents, the cameras will cost $19,750 in total. They're described as "crime prevention tools" used to identify vehicles used in the commission of crimes and data from vehicles not suspected of being used for criminal activity isn't accessed. During the November meeting, Galesburg police chief Russell Idle told council members that by default, the cameras will delete recorded footage after 30 days.
Five council members voted in favor of the motion, with Dwight White and Sarah Davis voting against.
