Portion of Galesburg building damaged by fire to be demolished

City officials said demolition work on the building's top level began on Tuesday, Feb. 20.

GALESBURG, Ill. — A fire-damaged building in Galesburg is set to be partially demolished.

Around 10:07 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 19, firefighters with the Galesburg Fire Department responded to 149 E. Main St. for a structure fire. Smoke could be seen coming out of a third-floor window. The building consists of two businesses on the main level and also has residential units on the second and third floors.

Galesburg city officials announced on Tuesday, Feb. 20 that the structural integrity of the top floor was compromised due to fire damage and is set to be demolished. Crews began demolishing that floor Tuesday night, and officials said that removing the top level is expected to resolve the concerns about the building's structural integrity so further decisions can be made about its future.

While work is underway, sidewalks and roads surrounding the building will be closed until further notice.
