MOLINE, Ill. — After sitting vacant for nearly three years, the former Hy-Vee at John Deere Road and 7th Street in Moline is getting a new tenant: ALDI.
The grocery chain plans to expand by adding around 800 stores over the next few years and will occupy part of the former Hy-Vee space, city officials have confirmed.
ALDI will not use the entire building at 750 42nd Avenue Dr., so city officials anticipate one or two additional retailers may share the space. However, it is too early to confirm who those other tenants might be.
Alderman Matt Timion, 4th Ward, says the city's Community and Economic Development Department is now fully staffed, so they've been working to fill storefronts.
"That's obviously a hot spot," he said of the John Deere Road corridor site. "It serves Rock Island too." Other companies have shown interest in the property, he said, but they didn't follow through.
The Hy-Vee store closed in January 2022 after company officials cited financial underperformance as the reason for its closure.
