DAVENPORT, Iowa — Former Davenport Mayor Thomas W. Hart has passed away, according to an obituary posting. He was 70 years old when he died on Wednesday, Jan. 24.

Hart was first elected to Davenport City Council in 1973 as alderman of the fourth ward. In 1984, he became the city's mayor, and he served three terms in that role. Throughout his life, Hart also served as commissioner of the Iowa Department of Transportation, chair of the Scott County Democratic Party and a consultant for the Iowa-Illinois Gas and Electric Company and the Quad-City Development Group. According to his obituary, Hart was a beloved and welcoming community member whose impact won't be soon forgotten.

"Above all else, Thom loved his family and friends spending much of his life supporting, celebrating, and cheering on the accomplishments of those he loved. Becoming a friend of Thom meant you became part of his larger extended family who were frequently on his mind, around his table, and in his prayers," Hart's obituary read.

Visitation for Hart will be on Friday, Feb. 9 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home. Hart's obituary said that instead of flowers, donations in his honor should be given to Empowering Abilities. This Davenport-based organization provides services and resources for Quad Citizens with disabilities.
