DAVENPORT, Iowa — The past is coming to life this week in a special way in the Quad Cities.
The showing of 'I Am the Future: Standing on the Shoulders of the Past' will take place Thursday, Jan. 11 at the Figge Art Museum in Davenport.
It's about the personal experiences of Quad City residents who fought for civil rights in the early 1960s. This includes Rev. Gabriel Barber III, Mayor Bill Gluba, Dr. Henry Brockington, Attorney Catherine (Kitty) Alexander, and AbdurRahmaan Howard as the student moderator. Click here for each bio.
"This 20-minute film demonstrates how the courageous actions of ordinary people laid the groundwork for future generations to stand up for racial equality and justice," according to a press release.
The film will be followed by a panel discussion with original Freedom Rider and veteran MacArthur Cotton along with local civil rights leaders.
The event is free and scheduled from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Figge. A cash bar with wine and beer plus hors d'oeurves will be offered during social hour from 5:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., when the film airs.
It is hosted by Progressive Action for the Common Good, WQPT, WVIK, and the Figge.
