GENESEO, Ill. — It was a morning full of pancakes and planes in Geneseo. On Sunday, Gen Air-Park held its annual Father’s Day Breakfast and Fly-In from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m.
The breakfast and fly-in has been around since 1981. According to Kent Johnson, the airport’s manager, this Father’s Day tradition feeds around 900-1,100 people each year. And while pancakes flew off the griddles, planes flew in and out of the airport putting on a show.
All different kinds of planes were at the airpark. From military planes to World War II training planes, there was plenty to look at.
Pilot Randy Stisser’s plane was one-of-a-kind as he put it together himself. The plane came in a kit — like a Lego set — and he put it together in his farm shop near his hometown of Kewanee. He says it took about six years total to put the plane together. Three years of work was done by a previous owner and three more years once he purchased it from him. His plane took its first flight in January of 2006.
In addition to planes in the air and on display, there were classic cars parked on the grass.
Even though the morning started out windy, and manager Kent Johnson wasn’t sure if the planes would be in the air, conditions ended up favorably for Father’s Day.
