CLINTON, Iowa — One person is dead and others are displaced after a residential fire in Clinton on Friday evening, according to city officials.
Just before 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 9, the Clinton Fire Department responded to a two-story residence in the 500 block of 9th Avenue South for a structure fire. Upon arrival, first responders said they saw smoke coming from the rear of the building. Witnesses told officials there was at least one, possibly two people, still inside.
First responders quickly searched the building and found one victim near the fire area in the first-floor apartment. No additional victims were located inside and no other injuries were reported, according to officials. Three cats were rescued from the second-floor apartment.
Additional agencies assisted Clinton Fire at the scene, including Camanche Fire, the Clinton Police Department, Clinton County Communications and Alliant Energy. The Salvation Army was called to assist displaced residents.
The Iowa State Fire Marshal's Office was also contacted to help with the ongoing investigation. No other information has been made available.
