According to police, numerous apartments in the building were broken into and burglarized.

MUSCATINE, Iowa — Update:

On Tuesday, Jan. 23, officials with the Muscatine Police Department announced that additional charges have been filed against 52-year-old Miguel Angel Salcedo. Salcedo is charged with an additional 12 counts of third-degree burglary, one count of trespass, one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm. Altogether, investigators say they've identified 13 victims in the incident.

Previous Story:

A Muscatine apartment building that was evacuated back in August due to structural concerns was recently burglarized, according to police.

Around 3:18 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 10, officers from the Muscatine Police Department were dispatched to Welch Apartments, located at 220 Iowa Ave. downtown. A contractor doing work on the building told police he believed someone was inside.

According to a press release, police searched the building and found a suspect in apartment 306. 52-year-old Miguel Angel Salcedo was arrested and charged with third-degree burglary, as well as an unserved arrest warrant.

Police believe multiple apartments were entered and burglarized, according to the release. The department said it will be working with the displaced residents to identify missing and recovered property. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to reach out to Sgt. Jeff DeVrieze at (563) 263-9922 ex. 629. The investigation is ongoing.

The Welch Apartments have been sitting vacant for months after its 17 residents were evacuated due to structural concerns. Back in late August, a structural engineer identified potential safety concerns in the over-a-century-old building, including walls bulging out and floors pulling away from the wall.

There are 26 units inside the building. Due to safety concerns, sidewalks and parking spaces near the apartment on West Third Street and Iowa Avenue have been blocked off indefinitely

The building has been listed on the National Registry of Historic Places since 1979. It became a contributing property in the Downtown Commercial Historic District in 2006.
