Memorial ride stops in Galesburg to honor Knox County Deputy Nicholas Weist

Weist was killed while trying to stop a fleeing suspect in 2022.

GALESBURG, Ill. — A group of volunteers paying tribute to America's fallen law enforcement officers made a stop in Galesburg on Wednesday, Aug. 7.

The End of Watch Ride to Remember, based out of Washington, travels across the country honoring officers who died in the line of duty. Four motorcycles escort a 40-foot rolling memorial tens of thousands of miles every year, and on Wednesday, they stopped at the Knox County Sheriff's Office. Their visit was in honor of Deputy Nicholas Weist, who was killed while trying to stop a fleeing suspect in 2022.

"For these guys to drive around the country and make all these stops and to stop at the agencies where we have lost a loved one, that's a brother of ours," Sheriff Jack Harlan said. "And for the community to be able to come together and to honor Nick, to be able to grieve together, to show Nick's family that even across the country people are still with you and love you, it's a blessing."

The 72-day tour for the End of Watch Ride to Remember ends on Sunday. The memorial also included a banner for family and friends to sign.
