ELDRIDGE, Iowa — The Eldridge City Council will hold a special meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. to consider action following a closed session discussion on Monday night.
The city council has met in closed session on four separate occasions since Sept. 6. Twice has been during regular council meetings on Sept. 6 and Oct. 3. The other two were during special meetings held on Oct. 11 and Monday, Oct. 24.
Two of those closed sessions were “to evaluate the professional competency of an individual whose appointment, hiring, performance, or discharge is being considered.” Part of Monday night's meeting was "to discuss strategy with counsel in matters that are presently in litigation or where litigation is imminent."
After returning to open session on Monday night, city officials said no action was taken during closed session and there would be no discussion about it in open session.
After the meeting, Mayor Frank King told News 8, "it's confidential, but tomorrow will probably explain a lot more." When asked if the council planned to take action Tuesday night against a city employee, he said, "possibly."
Eldridge council members voted 4-0 on Monday, Oct. 17 to ask Iowa State Auditor Rob Sand to conduct an unscheduled audit of city finances. Council member Adrian Blackwell was absent during that meeting, according to the minutes.
King could not discuss why the council was asking for the audit, calling it a "confidential personnel matter."
"They're supposed to start the middle of next month," King said. "It depends how in-depth this goes. We really don't know (when we'll receive Sand's audit report.)"
Iowa state law requires government officials "immediately notify the Auditor of State regarding any suspected embezzlement, theft, or other significant financial irregularities within a state or local government entity," according to the state auditor office's website.
