ROCK ISLAND, Illinois — Labor Day weekend means it's time for some racing in the District of Rock Island. The 22nd Annual Rock Island Grand Prix got underway this afternoon. It's the world's largest karting street race.
Racers ran 10 lap sprints to determine their starting positions on Saturday for the finals Sunday, Sept. 4. There are more than 140 teams, some of which are coming from as far away as Ontario and Bermuda.
"I'd like to say I'm excited for tomorrow, I'm really nervous because just, its dangerous. You can't get around that fact, its dangerous, but its a lot of fun at the same time. I just hope I can do well, make everyone proud. There are a lot of people come to watch, so we'll see what happens," said Carter Pease, kart racer.
The opening ceremonies start at 10:40 a.m. Sunday, followed by 17 races. General admission is free.
