Undercover police in North Carolina issued 52 tickets in about 90 minutes when they posed as construction workers as part of a campaign to curb aggressive driving.

The undercover sting was set up to reduce the number of drivers speeding, being inattentive and not wearing seat belts in construction zones.

Our sister station WGHP reports the officers wore hard hats and reflective vests and acted like workers in a road construction zone marked with cones to block a lane of traffic.

When the officers spotted a driver violating traffic laws, they radioed uniformed officers waiting just outside the “construction zone.”

Police defended the operation as a serious effort to increase safety in construction zones, and that the number of crashes have decreased since it started.  They planned to post officers in actual road construction zones in the future.
