Two people – a six-year-old boy and an adult kayaker – died in separate incidents at a popular Iowa lake July 10.
The Marion County Sheriffs Office responded to two drowning incidents at Lake Red Rock Sunday. Lake Red Rock is located a few miles southeast of the Des Moines metro area.
The first incident occurred around 5 p.m. when visitors at the North Overlook Beach were alerted to a missing six-year-old, later identified as Alexi Oquendo of Newton, Iowa. Oquendo’s body was found a short time after his disappearance, located about 25 yards from shore. Bystanders called 911 and attempted CPR, but the boy was pronounced dead at Pella Regional Hospital. According to police, the boy had been wearing a life jacket, but took it off before entering the water.
Later that evening, officers responded to a report of a capsized kayak. Using side scan sonar, the body of a man identified as Daniel Tutor of Des Moines was found. Tutor was pronounced dead by a medical examiner on the scene. He was wearing a life jacket.
