This weekend is the start of Global Entrepreneurship Week, seven days meant to encourage people to turn their dreams into a profitable reality. And here in the Quad Cities, one small business owner shares some tricks of the trade.

Mary Talbert opened Crafted Quad Cities in downtown Davenport back in January of 2015 after saving money for five years from art shows. And the goal of expanding in a year only took her six months.

She nearly quadrupled her number or vendors in just ten months with little to no prior business knowledge. Talbert says the key to starting your own business is research, saving money, and commitment.

She says she used local resources like the Small Business Development Council, and entrepreneur books and Facebook pages. You also have to be willing to put in the time.

"I think the number one thing you have to do is put every single ounce of your soul into it," says Talbert.

Crafted QC is also a place to showcase smaller businesses, people who make their own products but don't have a window front.

"It's nice to make connections locally, so that's why I look to shops. It gives me more exposure as well," says Monica Schons, Two Gems Jewelry operator.

Talbert says the first year in business is the make or break point for a new small business.

"Here's how much money I need per week to survive, and that's all I want to do year one is survive," says Talbert.

But because of extensive research, commitment, and a little bit of luck, the future looks bright for the little shop on Second Street.

"What I would like to do is expand this physical space so I have room for bigger items like furniture or clothing," says Talbert.
