Thousands of dollars found in thrift store sofa

Three New York roommates were shocked when they found $40,000 cash hidden in a secondhand couch they bought for $20 at a thrift store.

Three New York roommates were shocked when they found $40,000 cash hidden in a secondhand couch they bought for $20 at a thrift store.

“We almost didn’t pick that couch,” one roommate said. “It’s pretty ugly and smells, but it was the only couch that fit the right dimensions for our living room.”

The three college students said the first time they settled in to the sofa in early March 2014, one of them found a plastic envelope under the arm. It held a wad of $20 bills that added up to $700 according to The Little Rebellion.com.

The roommates ransacked the couch and, sure enough, there was more money there.

“Just when we thought we pulled out the last envelope, we’d find another $1,000 a few minutes later,” one roommate said.

The discovery totaled $40,000 in cash.

They found a woman’s name on paper in one of the envelopes, and knew they had to get the money back to the rightful owner.

The woman spent years sleeping on, and stashing money in, that couch. When she had a back operation, the woman’s daughter replaced the sofa with a full-size bed. The couch went to the Salvation Army.

The woman gave a $1,000 reward to the honest students who returned her money.
