The Iowa Department of Natural Resources regularly monitors beaches across the state and so far, so good.
The DNR monitors state beaches for algae and contaminants such as E. coli, both of which can give you rashes, stomach cramps and diarrhea. Locally-managed beaches are subject to voluntary monitoring.
E. coli must reach 235 organisms per 100 milliliters of water or higher to be considered dangerous. Most monitored beaches in Iowa are between five and 25% of that level.
WOI-TV reports the warm weather could bring problems later, though, citing concerns from the DNR about blue-green algae blooming when water warms in summer heat.
