EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (AP) — The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville has decided to remove men’s tennis and women’s golf from its varsity sports roster.

A news release from the university says the decision is a result of a seven-month financial analysis conducted by its Intercollegiate Athletics Committee amid the state budget impasse. The committee was tasked with making a $200,000 reduction in the school’s athletics department budget.

The committee’s recommendation was approved by Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Interim Chancellor Stephen Hansen and Southern Illinois University President Randy Dunn.

The men’s tennis program began started in 1974 and the women’s golf program began in 1998.

Sixteen current athletes, eight from each team, will be affected by the decision.
