Some of the most dangerous cities in Iowa and Illinois are in the Quad Cities area.
An annual report from Law Street Media used FBI statistics to list the most dangerous states in the U.S., and the most dangerous cities in those states. The locations were ranked based on violent crime (murder, rape, aggravated assault and robbery) committed per 100,000 residents.
Iowa ranked #34 on the list, with 271 violent crimes per 100,000 people.
Clinton was the second most dangerous city in Iowa, the list said, with a violent crime rate of 669.88. Davenport ranked third with two murders reported and a 642.22 crime rate. Bettendorf made the top ten most dangers cities in Iowa with a 248.93 violent crime rate.
The report listed Council Bluffs as the most dangerous city in Iowa.
Illinois ranked #20 with 380 violent crimes per 100,000 people.
Rock Island ranked as the 9th most dangerous city in Illinois, Galesburg ranked at #17 and Moline ranked #23.
The report listed the Chicago suburb of Harvey as the most dangerous city in Illinois. Rockford followed at #2 in Illinois, with fewer violent crimes overall but nearly twice as many murders as Harvey.
Those statistics also placed Rockford at #2 on the list of most dangerous cities with a population under 200,000 in the entire country.
The report showed Chicago had 414 murders reported, but Chicago was excluded because their data was deemed incomplete.
“The FBI determined that Chicago’s data were underreported, thus the city cannot be ranked relative to any other city,” the report said. “The FBI also determined that Chicago’s data collection methodology for the offense of rape (which is included in violent crime) does not comply with national Uniform Crime Report guidelines.”
The report ranked Alaska the most dangerous state with 640 violent crimes per 100,000 people.
