An Illinois veteran is reunited with five medals for military service, including a Purple Heart he lost years ago.
Steve Palmer received replacement medals in Rock Island this morning. Illinois congresswoman Cheri Bustos gave him the replacements after his ex-wife burned them about 25 years ago. Palmer now lives in Coal Valley, Illinois. He served as a sergeant in the army during the Vietnam War.
“It's a privilege. Never thought I'd see these again especially after all the trouble I went through to get them. I'm very proud to see these again after this many years,” said Palmer.
Palmer plans to put the medals on a plaque as a monument in his home for family and friends to enjoy. Besides the Purple Heart, he also received the Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Vietnam Service Medal.
