The City of Rock Island is making preparations for the Mississippi River to rise out of its banks.
According to the Rock Island Public Works Director Randall Tweet, pumps are being installed and gateways are being closed as part of the flood strategy plan.
As of Friday, June 20, 2014, 18th Avenue at Potter’s Lake will be closed as well as the Great River Trail bike path at the Moline border.
Tweet said that several discharge hoses have been placed across the Rock Island portion of the bike path. Residents are urged to use caution when biking or walking over these hoses.
“The City’s Incident Command Team meets weekly and responds as needed to flooding,” Tweet said.
Whenever Rock Island is faced with weather challenges, the city follows the National Incident Management System procedures.
