BURLINGTON, Iowa -- A woman was killed in a fire at a Burlington duplex.
Ten on-duty Burlington firefighters, with the assistance of five West Burlington firefighters, arrived at the house at 152 South 9th Street around 6:15 a.m. on Sunday, May 7th after a fire was discovered by an off duty Burlington Police officer.
They found flames coming from one of the downstairs windows.
Upon entering the home, firefighters found the a woman and tried to resuscitate her, but she was later pronounced dead. Fire Marshal Mark Crooks later identified the woman as 27-year-old Tiffany Owens.
According Crooks, the two-story duplex sustained nearly $50,000 in damage, including $40,000 in damage to the structure and $10,000 to the contents.
Three tenants from a second apartment were also displaced and the Red Cross is helping them with shelter and clothing.
There were working smoke alarms in both apartments.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Burlington Police and Fire Departments, as well as the Iowa State Fire Marshal's office.
