IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — A former trooper with the Iowa State Patrol has pleaded guilty to operating while intoxicated following a December arrest for a late-night home disturbance.

Patrick Steinbach pleaded guilty in early March, days after The Associated Press reported on his case.  Steinbach repeatedly tried to get out of an arrest for operating while intoxicated by refusing to cooperate, then berated the arresting officer for making the “community weaker.”

Judge Marsha Bergan fined Steinbach $1,250 and gave him the choice of serving two days at the Iowa County Jail or completing a weekend OWI program.

Audio and video from the arresting officer’s body camera and car were reportedly released Monday, March 21, 2016, showing Steinbach acting belligerently during his Dec. 20 arrest.

Steinbach, a 28-year-old former Iowa State football player, resigned from the patrol last month.

One of Steinbach’s neighbors in Williamsburg called 911 on Dec. 20 to report an unknown man outside her home, pounding on the door and refusing to leave. Steinbach was arrested after admitting he’d been drinking and failing sobriety tests.

Steinbach later received special treatment from a booking officer at the jail.
