National POW/MIA Recognition Day is the third Friday in September each year.

This year, the day is observed on September 21, 2012.

In observance of National POW/MIA Recognition Day, the National League of Families POW/MIA flag is flown at major military installations, national cemeteries, post offices, VA medical facilities and national war memorial sites as well as at the White House and certain federal government offices.

The Department of Defense website says more than 83,000 Americans are missing from World War II, the Korean War, the Cold War, the Vietnam War and the 1991 Gulf War.

Starting this year, the DOD website is listing recently accounted-for service members in chronological order based on their accounted-for date.
