A Quad City man who secretly taped people in tanning rooms at an area gym is headed to jail, but not for long.

Trent Hamer was sentenced Wednesday afternoon to just 90 days in the Rock Island County Jail.

At his sentencing, prosecutors said they could prove Hamer had placed two video cameras in two rooms at Planet Fitness in Moline last year, but one camera malfunctioned, and  he was arrested before he was able to retrieve the naked images off of the second one.

That, and prosecutors say, a poorly written law on hidden cameras, allows Hamer to avoid a stiffer sentence.

Hamer says he has lost his job over the matter, and apologized to the people he caught undressing on camera.

"Your honor, I am filled with remorse, embarrassment, and shame. I really regret what I've done. I made a stupid mistake and it will never, ever happen again," he said.

Prosecutors say police found Hamer had visited voyeuristic websites with tanning room videos before he hid the cameras in the gym.

They say some of the victims have sought counseling.

Hamer will be on two years probation after serving the 90 days in jail. He reports to the jail on Monday, and  will be allowed out for two weeks over the holidays, and then will continue his sentence.

The judge advised a mental health evaluation, and said Hamer will be subject to random searches of this computer.
